A Liar's Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python's Graham Chapman

Bill Jones, Jeff Simpson and Ben Timlett / United Kingdom / 2013 / 81’

A Liar's Autobiography is the adaptation – in the form of a surrealist animated biopic – of the sixth volume (sic) of the false and fictitious autobiography Graham Chapman wrote in 1980. It is, in fact, the first and only autobiography with five different writers behind it. Although he has been dead for twenty-three years, Chapman has managed to come back from the grave (!) as the narrator of the film thanks to recently discovered recordings of him reading his book, made three years before he died of throat cancer in 1989.

The film narrates his grim childhood during the war, his time at Cambridge University in the company of John Cleese, their days of glory with Monty Python, his coming out of the closet – first privately, and then the open and public declaration of his homosexuality on British television – and his alien abduction by an extraterrestrial spacecraft in the shape of a phallus.

The film features the participation of most of the remaining Pythons: John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam play themselves, Chapman's family and contribute with their vocal talents to breathe life into all kinds of characters, from Aleister Crowley to Queen Elizabeth.

Fourteen independent animation studios have participated in the film and each one has animated the distinct segments using different animation techniques and styles. Ben Timlett, Jeff Simpson and Bill Jones (Terry Jones’ son) are the conductors of this vibrant kaleidoscopic collage, which reconstructs a fictitious life but with profound traces of reality.
